BROADCASTER MediaCorp TV has been fined $15,000 by the Media Development Authority (MDA) for airing a show that featured a gay couple and their adopted baby.
The MDA said yesterday that an episode of an acquired home and decor series, Find and Design, "normalises and promotes a gay lifestyle". In the episode - aired on Channel 5 at 7.30am on Sunday, Jan 13 - the host helped a gay couple turn their game room into a nursery for their adopted baby.
The MDA objected to several scenes of the couple and their baby together, and the host's acknowledgement of the pair as a family.
It said they breached the Free-to-Air TV Programme Code, "which disallows programmes that promote, justify or glamorise gay lifestyles".The MDA had consulted the Programme Advisory Committee for English Programmes, which frowned on the episode's presentation of a gay relationship as an acceptable family unit, and its airing during family viewing hours.
Mr Kenneth Liang, executive vice-president of programming and production for Channel 5, told The Straits Times that regulations were open to interpretation.
He said: "In this case, we overstepped the line. We understand the OB (out-of-bounds) markers in this area more clearly now, and this won't happen again."
This is MediaCorp TV's second breach of the code.
In 2002, it was fined $10,000 for airing offensive footage from a sex-scandal video of Taiwanese legislator Chu Mei-Feng, on Channel 8's News 8 at 10.

Isn't it a little ridiculous in giving out fines for such reasons? Surely the MDA don't have to be so outright in being anti-gay.
Weather having a gay family is right or wrong is another issue altogether. But everyone is entittled to their own opinion and views...still, it does not mean that one can have the right to censor words/ideas that one don't agree with. It's not as if the media is promoting violence or crime like that...

Homosexuality is illegal and most Singaporeans want to keep it that way. Those who live in Singapore must observe the laws or face the consequences...period.

so whats with MDA?
being gay also wrongI agree being gay is fine 'as long as one does not force their ideas' on others. However, the recent attempt by the gay community to repeal 377A despite the overwhelming objection of Singaporeans indicates that they do intend to force the majority to accept their idea that homosexuality should be regarded as socially acceptable. Gays should be allowed to go about their daily activities and nobody is going to question what they do in their homes. But when gays try to seek a greater public presence, they run up against the views of the majority who are socially and religiously conservative. Conflicts are inevitable and in such conflicts, the will of the majority must prevail.
Mediacorp's action is tentamount to promoting the gay lifestyle, which is forbidden by the laws of Singapore.

i don't think it's ok to be hiding the truth from the ppl too.. pretending that they don't exist.. how can like that..? u dun let ppl know of the existence of gays, den one day, they see a gay couple, automatically they brand them as weird.. it's unfair to them lo..
if u dunwan ur kids to turn gay next time, the best thing is not to hide the truth from them what.. is to educate them.. let them know there are such ppl ard.. hide from them is not a solution..
